Why Does Harry Camlasaran Ride?

Why Does Harry Camlasaran Ride?

I have been in the financial services industry for the past 27 years. During this period, I have helped many families plan their financial futures with investment and insurance products. Over the last six years, though, I have lost some of my clients to cancer and other critical illnesses.

When I heard of The Enbridge® Ride to Conquer Cancer® benefiting Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, I couldn’t hold back, so I joined Team Desjardins Bolts alongside my coworkers and friends.

This is an outstanding chance to cycle, raise awareness about an illness that kills hundreds of Canadians every day and raise critical dollars that are immediately put to use at one of the top five cancer research centres in the world: The Princess Margaret in Toronto.

I was inspired to ride because my cousin, like me, is in his 50s and was approved to set up a clinical illness plan. However, he declined, saying he would never need it because he was healthy. One year later, my cousin was diagnosed with cancer in his intestines.

My cousin underwent chemotherapy and lost all his hair as well as a ton of weight. He had a relapse and was back in hospital even after a round of harsh treatment. It’s been five years since his initial diagnosis. Thankfully, he is still with us today. He’s one of the lucky ones.

I participated in my first Ride to Conquer Cancer in 2015 where I raised over $19,000 for The Princess Margaret. I was able to raise such an epic amount because of my supportive clients, family members and friends.

Already registered for 2016, I have raised over $11,000 thanks to my dedicated support team. All of this money is benefiting Personalized Cancer Medicine, including research, treatment advances, education and new standards of care at The Princess Margaret, across Ontario and around the world. It’s truly a team effort.

I am so excited that I am the second winner in The Quest for the Gold Jersey. I am so honoured to be a part of The Ride to Conquer Cancer and I can’t wait to continue to share this event with thousands!

Together, we train, we fundraise and we work as a team to really make a difference—in the world and in ourselves.

Being a Rider has made me focus on my physical wellbeing. I do spin classes at the gym in the winter and ride outdoors during the warmer months. This event has brought me to a different level of fitness. I feel so strong!

Participating in the 200-‐kilometre cycling journey has also impacted my family. I have four children; my oldest is 27 years old. Seeing my family as I crossed the finish line in 2015 was a beautiful experience that I wish more people would have.

When I think of the thousands of people at The Ride to Conquer Cancer start-‐line, I feel utter positivity. We are working together to conquer this thing.
